Questions are good! Here are some of our reflections.
Tha Script is a digital space where all peoples are welcome and safe to engage in sacred text. In essence, we are a social learning group where we open-source the translation process of sacred text.
Language changes. New words are formed. Old words take on new meaning. There is a need in every generation to keep the language of sacred text current, fresh, and understandable—the way it was for its very first hearers and readers. That is what Tha Script seeks to accomplish for contemporary readers and hearers.
It isn't meant to replace your current Holy Book of choice. Rather, it is designed as an interactive paraphrase that can give you a fresh perspective on a familiar phrase or passage. It's written in the kind of language that you would use to write a letter to a friend. There are no formal terms, so it's a smooth easy read. Tha Script reads out like an ongoing conversation thread with a close intimate friend.
Tha Script is an ongoing vision of Fred Lynch, who first published the entire book of the Gospel of John in Tha Script format in 2009. Additional translated texts include Ecclesiastes, along with about eight major parables from the gospels translated. October 2024 we have officially launched Tha Script into the world of "open source" where other collaborators are invited to engage on a global level!
Three principles that guide Script Collab's (collaborations that are submitted, vetted and added to the project) are:
If you're interested in becoming a "Scribe" (a vetted transcriber of text) or a "witness" (collaborator who offers a single or occasional contribution to the translation process) contact a staff member for more information! They can give you advice or mentor you directly to the role.
